字重光，初名从嘉，号锺隐。徐州（今属江苏）人，一说湖州（今属浙江）人。

李煜在中国词史上占有重要的地位，对后世影响亦大。他继承了晚唐以来花间派词人的传统，但又通过具体可感的个性形象，反映现实生活中具有一般意义的某种意境，由是将词的创作向前推进了一大步，扩大了词的表现领域。
李煜文、词及书、画创作均丰。其词主要收集在《南唐二主词》中。
